We've done a Datsun (early Nissan marque) conversion... flawless, and
dirt cheap because we'd just junked a '74 Datsun (L 20 block).

We tried to fit a Chevvy alternator, but it needed too many mechanical
alternations to fit the catagory of "easily replaceable from off the
shelf!!".  Then we tried a Dodge alternator, and everything lined up;
ie the pulley was the right size, and it lined up with the crank pulley,
and the adjusting boss was on the bottom, where it would line up with
the tensioning arm from the block

If he objects, you're dealing with the wrong outfit. Lots of guys want
to modify their cars, and enlist the help of the parts stores. He/she
should be able to eyeball the generator mounting lugs and come up with
a couple of samples for you to examine. Basically, he only has to bring
you three: Chev, Dodge, and Ford. You need the basic amp rating for
what your car needs. Imagine: heater on, lights on high, wipers on high
speed, and the battery still charges up!!
