Foolishly, I responded with a quicky answer. I have gone out and looked at my
'68, and my  '74 MGBGT, and can now provide a better answer.

I found at least three potential "artificial" ground connections - Heater
control cable, Speedometer cable, and Accelerater cable. By "artificial", I
mean they are not "wires" intended to carry current, but, being metal, they
will. This means that most items on the engine will work OK without the
ground strap - Coil, Temperature sender, etc. However, the excessive current
draw of the starter may very well melt the insulation on these ground
connections, and even burn the cables in two.
