POWER from your own engine?"
I don't doubt that you can extract V-8 power from a 4-cylinder
engine, but that poor little engine is going to be thrashing about
mightily while doing it. With 30-year old metallurgy, I give it
about 50,000 miles between rebuilds, if you have a heavy foot.
When I first got my factory GT V-8, I took my wife out in it and she
said "This is the quietest MG you've ever had". I now have a car
that can go quickly, but QUIETLY. And the engine will last a long
while.
An ideal situation would be to have BOTH. A roadster with the
Darby crossflow head, hot cam, and all the other trick goodies,
and a GT V-8, either factory or conversion. Use the roadster on
boy racer weekend blasts, after all, you don't care about quiet with
a ragtop. The GT V-8 is for your daily commute, and for romantic trips
with your significant other (put a Webasto or Britax sunroof in if you
miss looking up at the stars).
Now that I've said that, Steve...does your crossflow head fit under
the bonnet of an MGA? I've got a 1600 MkII roadster parked next to
the V-8 that's just itching for more power...
Cheers, PK
