Hello all
I am a newbie, subscribed a year ago for a few months, but this is my
first posting. I have been given permission to spend my tax return on my
'70 MGBGT.... and have a few questions:
Brakes - Upon inspection found that I have a strange condition- that when
I apply the brake it will squeeze the disc, but will not retract fully.
The local mechanic thought that the brake line had begun to deteriorate,
causing a smaller channel, making it difficult for the cylinder to loosen
after being applied. He recommends new lines, calipers and cylinders.
Does this sound right? He also recommended replacing all for fear that
the new will cause the old to fail. Any comments?
Valves/cam - When I adjusted the valves the PO had tightened them to less
than .012 so I let them out to .015 (as per the manual) and they are
noisy, noisy, noisy. Again, the mechanic suggests the cam as the culprit,
and suggests a new cam with a valve job as well. I have been told that
tightening them again and adding SLICK 50 would solve the earache, and
that the improvements are negligible. I have never driven a newly
restored MGB (much less a *new* one) so I have no idea of how much power
if any would be gained through such an expensive overhaul. If I do this,
what other things should I look for while doing the job?
Tires- I have been told that the P175/75 R14 tire is obsolete, that I
should use a 185/70 R14 instead. Besides parting with original only
philosophy, will this tire work?
Any comments would be greatly appreciated, O wise ones.....
