Sorry if its been covered, but I'm a digest type of lurker.

I had the same problem.  Turned out to be a cracked gear.  The nylon or
white plastic gear that meshes withthe work gear inside the speedo. 
Sounded just like something catching between the magnet and flywheel. 
Took a file and 'corrected' the pitch of the teeth so it didn't hit
anymore.  Still working fine a year later.
