wont work that way...
Either the belt will not release properly as it will lock or it will release
freely but won't lock in the event of an accident. Don't mess with it just
put the bracket back on.

My 1979 MGB was covered by the seatbelt recall. Rover was prompt in
supplying the new belts but to my surprise they arrived in a box with no
instructions. As orginally fitted the retraction/inertial device was
mounted on a metal bracket which in turn was bolted to the wheelwell in
the cockpit. The result is that plane of the retracting roller is
horizontal.
In installing the news belts it occured to me that device could be
bolted directly to the captive nut in the wheel well doing away with the
bracket, but this would put the roller in a vertical oreintation.
Does anyone know if this would adversely affect the function?
