About ten years ago I restored a 79B that had a fire under the hood (good
old Zenith) Bought the car for $600 at an insurance auction, pulled the
engine cleaned to engine compartment, painted the while car red, installed
the engine this time with
dual SUs and had a beautiful stunning B.
A year later, a young college student plows into the car and totals it. Her
insurance was the minimal $5,000 property damage. I submitted a claim for
the $5000 and received a call from her adjuster. He told me that there
"wasn't an MG in the world that was worth 5 grand" Those were fighting
words to me.
I sent pictures of the car along with a letter from a friend in the
industry that the car was worth $10,000. They settled the next day for
$4900 and let me keep the wreck for parts.
Bought my 80 LE the next day for $4900.
Take pictures, with trophies etc. and save. You have the right to challenge
book value with replacement value.
