As a matter of fact, I just did it, due to a leaky heater core. I'm =
almost ready to put it back in, after cleaning and painting all the =
parts. =20
Removal is not that complicated, but it can be physically difficult (as
=
a matter of fact, it was kindof a bear), as the crazy thing is usually =
either glued or gooked in place. There are only 2 hoses that connect to =
it, and they come away from the box naturally, and stay mounted in the =
car's body. Watch out for brake lines, as well as the windscreen washer =
hose, as they pass over the top of the flange of the box that connects =
to the body of the car.
I found it best to remove the fan motor before tearing out the box, =
just to keep from messing up the wires, or worse, getting shocked.
Just out of curiosity, what's wrong with your heater? Does it leak? =
Does it just not generate heat? If it leaks, you obviously need to =
repair/replace (I opted for replace, as it's not worth doing the job =
again!). If it just doesn't get hot, it's probably just clogged. This =
can be rectified simply by disconnecting the two hoses from the engine, =
and flushing it both ways with a hose. If that doesn't do it, you'll =
probably have to pull it out...
If you're doing the cooling system now, I'd definitely make sure the =
heater core is in good order. If it's clogged up with gunk, it'll send =
a bunch of it into the rest of your cooling system, and...well, you get =
the picture. On the other hand, you could just take it out of the loop =
by connecting a single hose to the water control valve and...well, the =
other place the heater hooks up to. I did this this summer when I =
realized the heater was leaking onto my feet!
Gook luck!

Subject: MGB Heater Removal
Hello all:
=20
I'm in the process of overhauling the cooling system on my 1970 =
MGB. =20
Last night I found myself staring at the heater box up on the=20
firewall. It's never worked very well, but I don't tend to use it=20
here in Oregon as it doesn't get very cold. Nonetheless, it does =
seem=20
like the perfect time to fix it since the cooling system is already =
drained.
=20
My Haynes manual makes the heater removal sound straightforward, =
but I=20
wondered if anyone has removed one lately? How difficult is it to=20
disconnect all those heater hoses and such behind the dash? Any =
tips=20
or tricks?
=20
Thanks in advance for the help!
