As you push the lock through the hole in the door, there are metal clips
which
get compressed as they go through and then expand to hold the lock in
place.
Removing them is much more difficult! I was able to get my locks out
using
needle nose pliers to compress these springs and push them out. I also
had
the rest of the guts of the door out and my door on the B&D workmate in
the
basement. Maybe someone's found a special tool or technique -- I would
like
to hear it in case I ever do this again!

Today I'm a bit in the answering mood!
I had the same problem as you until I found out that you can remove the
steel springs very easily from the lock itself. To remove the locks you just
clip off the steel springs and take the lock out of your door - the circular
spring is open on one side! - .
Installment is the same. Clip off the spring, insert the lock and clip the
spring on the lock again (I admit that in practice this is not as easy as it
takes to write this!)
I found this out because my paintshop had accidentily filled the small
recesses in the door for the locks. No way that I could fit the locks the
same way as I had taken them out, without damaging the new paint.
Been there, done that!
