Yup, I know of several companies that have such an aftermarket kit
available. They
are usually referred to as "crank-fire" ignitions or direct ignition. A
toothed wheel is placed on the front crankshaft pulley or flywheel, an
inductive pickup "reads" the teeth on the wheel and sends signals to a
central cpu which then send a signal to a set of coils to fire the
appropriate spark plug.
In these systems, a pair of cylinders share 1 coil, so on a 4-cyl eng
out would have
2 coils. The electronics takes care of dwell, advance (at any rpm), etc.
Most of these systems are fully programmable (usually hooked to a PC).
These systems can now be integrated with the fuel ignition systems to
give a true, fully-mapped, programmable system.
I know of several places in the UK which have true mapped multi-port fuel
injection systems for the after market. Here in the USA there is TWM,
which manifolds, throttle bodies, elec. & ignition systems for the
aftermarket.
Hal-Tech (from Canada ?) makes a mapped ign/fuel systems for virtually
any car with direct injection.
Electromative IGn. have direct ignition systems available for the after
market.
