Yes there is something else that can cause those nasty noises, it's the
rear bearing in the tranny. When the bearing is bad it can sound like the
rear end is shot. I had this problem on one of my cars, I had a synchro
problem also, finally swapped the tranny to resolve the synchro problem and
my noisy differential was no more. The only thing for me to do now if
replace the synchro ring and the rear bearing and replace the tranny to
prove my theory. The bearing seems the likey cause to me at this point.
