Spridget axles

Hi gang,
 Are Sprite/Midget axles all the same, except for the
variation between disc wheels and wire wheels?  Someone
told me last week that the early cars (quarter elliptic Sprite
MK1/2 and Midget MK1) had a different rear end with different
axles.  I realize the casing is probably different, but thought
the axles were all the same.
