My Robins Canvas to said in the instructions to release the latches before
attempting to zipper or unzipper the window to prevent damage to the window.
Never had any problems with it although I usually just put the top down.
It's real handy if you need to bring 2 x 4s home from home depot in the rain
though ;-)

My '78 that has the zip out rear windows is really convenient, and it
helps get air circulate through the cabin, but if you're like me, I like
to zip it up and down each evening and morning as I'm going to work.
This zipper isn't designed for this, and it's starting to come apart.
If you have any hopes of using the zip-out rear windows regularly then
no, don't get that type of top.
Get the top with the sealed seams. I think it'll last longer, and don't
put any chemicals on the plastic windows, or you'll get white
windows(kinda like tinted windows 'cept you can't see through them
either).
