Recently got it, but have only skimmed it so far. He seems to know a
lot about his subject and covers the engine in excellent detail.
Interestingly, he considers the various parts of the stock system as
quite good in general. For example, unless one is modifying the engine
for extreme levels of output, the stock cam is fine. Likewise, properly
maintained SU carbs are OK for several levels of mods above stock. The
head is archaic, but he devotes a lot of print on how to improving
breathing, including what the owner can do without extensive machine
shop services. I particularly like the fact that he quantifies the
actual HP at the rear wheels ranging from stock up to pretty hairy (for
a B) modified condition. I haven't got to the brakes or suspension yet,
but the book is strongest on engine mods.

Fellow SOLers-

Anyone have anything to say about Peter Burgess' book "How to Powertune
MGB Four Cylinder Engines"? I have a bastardized 77 B, with a 79
engine, Weber DGV carb & header, Crane ignition, and an earlier cylinder
head. I don't know what year the head is from, I am guessing early
air-pump days.

I would like to get a little more power, and performance, without doing
a re-build. Whatever I do (if anything), I plan to acheive while the
engine is in the car.

The book sounds interesting, and supposedly covers things like brakes,
and suspension. Is it worthwhile given the planned scope of any
modifications?

Also: Does anyone have a simple way of determining what year head is on
this car? It would be helpful to know what compression ratio I am
running!

Regards,

Chris Delling
