Keep on looking. I looked for a while until I found what I now own. Though
it's newer that I wanted (1980), as soon as I saw it, I decided it was the
one. The body is in great shape, interior needs a little fixing and it's
mechanically sound. All this for a fairly good price, a bit more than I
originally planned on spending, but it's worth it. Along the way I saw some
real dogs. I'm all for fixing 'em up, but they better come cheap! Good luck

I came the closest I've ever been to owning an MGB this past weekend. I made
an offer on a '64 (Smog free) red, wire-wheeled roadster on Saturday and out
bid the previous buy. It looked like the car was mine all day Sunday until
the call came in at 5pm. Someone else had made a bid that was $350 higher
than mine. And I thought my bid was pushing the envelope. Especially since
the car's interior was shot, it had a dented front wing, the driver's door
was wonky and there were visible rust bubbles on the sills. From the
cosmetic problems I could see, I calculated (with the help of a?? Moss
catalog) at least $1500 in parts alone would be needed to set things right.
I couldn't in good conscience top that bid and still look myself in the
mirror. So I passed.
This is the third car I've come close to. The first one, a '67, had cancerous
hidden rust. The second, a '66, would never pass smog. And now a bidding
war.
Now comes the "non-buyer's remorse." Did I do the right thing? Are there any
good B's left out there for sale? Will I ever find one? Am I destined to
become one of those Miata owners who wish they had a B? Or heaven forbid, an
Alfa owner?
I'm sure I'm not the only one who's gone through this frustration. Can one of
the internet sages give me some advice or words of comfort?
