Sounds like a classic case of vapour lock. And the solution is relatively
easy.
The problem stems from the routing of the fuel line (across the back of the
engine, then down the side of the block to the pump)
The solution is to re-route the line as far away from the heat source
(engine) as possible, for as long as possible. Also, using FIREPROOF
insulating material to wrap the line will also help greatly.
The Ultimate solution is to un-plumb the mechanical fuel pump from the
system and install an electric pump as near the tank as possible. Remember,
you can always push an air bubble in the line, but it is next to impossible
to pull is through
