I am no expert, and others here can probably explain this better,
but as I understand it, Nitriding is a heat-treating process that
hardens the outer surface of the crank. It is said to significantly
reduce wear. Knife-edging is a technique that racers use to reduce
the resistance of the crankshaft counterweights as they spin through
the oil in the pan (similar to a windage tray) The flat section of
the counterweights are ground into to a v.
