>>> Has anyone on the list experience with the advantages of fitting
an oil cooler to an MGA? Specifically, I would like to know
the effects on operating temps., what type of oil cooler to use,
availability, fittings and set up and changes to the filtering
system (I still have the center bolted cannister filter type).
Any input would be welcome. Oh, I forgot to mention cost. >>>
During the restoration I put a spin-on filter adaptor and oil cooler
(both from Moss) on my '57 MGA. I don't know if the cooler helps (I
never ran the car before without it :-) but it makes me feel better.
The spin-on filter adaptor is definately nice.
One thing with the cooler: when trying to attach the hoses one of them
had to be twisted 90 degrees before I could attach it to the cooler
itself, but twisting it like that kinked the hose. I tried a plumbing
elbow but it leaked. When I finally took the elbow off the hose was
warm and twisted without kinking and now everything is just fine.
So... HINT: warm the hose somehow so you can twist it without kinking.
'Nuther hint: make sure that the old O-ring gasket is removed from the
oil filter cannister slot before you try to insert a new gasket when
installing the spin-on adaptor. This will save lots of oil from
spilling on your garage floor :-)
