Tonneau Covers

I have a full tonneau cover for my TD. It is very old (maybe the
original) but in good condition. Do these things do a good job
of keeping the rain out? I don't see how they could be water 
tight with the zipper down the middle. I try not to take the old
girl out if it looks like rain, but sometimes it comes up suddenly.

How about the half tonneaus, are they just for keeping your
junk in the back under cover?
