You are correct. One would get very embarassed by just dropping a big
valve head onto a non-18V block. Valve cut-outs are required. It is
possible to mill said cutouts into older blocks, but these heads are
not just plug-in replacements....
Incidentally, I got a big-valve head _without_ the dreaded
air-injection ports (no cracks!) when I ordered a rebuilt from British
Parts NW in Dayton, OR. They use a European core (presumably rebuilt
in England). These are currently $395 outright with stainless exhaust
valves and hardened seats. I'm quite happy with mine (went onto a '73
18V).
