Hello all,
I'd like to thank all who responded to my 'Ignition light dies' and
'Strange tach' question. After a week of investigating I found the
problem and I thought it would be of interest for the group, so here
it is:
The problem was a blown Voltage Regulator caused by a loose wire in
the brushes of the generator. However when I installed a new VR the
problem was still not solved. The red light stayed on.
After one week of checking:
1. the generator
2. wiring
3. voltage regulator (new!)
It turned out to be the new VR which was faulty. I don't know the
make (I think GZ) but it can definitely be characterised as a 'bogus'
part. When I tried another one of the same make it turned out to be
faulty as well. At that moment I was almost in a state of despair.
When the vendor found an original Lucas RB340 VR on his shelf I
installed that one. Surprise: It worked allright.
So for me no more bogus parts. The original Lucas works for me as
'Prince of light'. And Jay Tilton was right, my tachometer works a
lot better as well.
The moral of this story:
Don't expect that every new part works always as it should!
