Mechanical Checks?

I'm going to a show and sale this Sunday (The one in Dixon, CA) and hoping, 
somewhat naively, to find the car of my dreams for sale there.  Now since 
finding a mechanic to give it a once over at the show will be impossible, are 
there any simple mechanical checks I can do to make sure I don't end up with a 
nightmare?  Thanks in advance for your replies.
