Bott's dots

MG related...kind of...

I'm trying to verify the genesis of Bott's dots.  As I remember the 
story, and English fellow (named Bott)  driving in the fog was able 
to keep from going off the road by "feeling" his way along with the 
rocks on the side of the road.  Took the idea and made "Bott's 
dots"...probably didn't make any money off of it!

Now, if anyone can provide the definitive story, I'd be appreciative.
