Hi,
Tie rod ends on most British cars should be replaced if there is any
movement side-to-side or up and down or if the boots are torn or missing.
Free-play can be found after supporting the car on jackstands and
grabbing the tire at its sides and trying to move it while watching for
movement at the tie rod end. Note the position on the threaded tie rod so
that your new tie rod end adjustment will be close until you can have it
properly aligned.
You'll note that tie rod end boots aren't generally available. Safety
guidelines consider a bootless tie rod end to be old enough to warrant
replacement.
A little free-play at the tie rod end can translate to quite a bit at
the steering wheel.

Does any one have a method for diagnosing failed tie rod ends on a '77 B?
Please reply directly in-as-much I am having some problems receiving items
posted to the list.
