I'm amazed that my little message on steering wheels has generated the
volume and duration of controversy that it has. 13 days so far?

First, there are 5 different types of steering columns in the MGB.
Perhaps the nuts are different on them? Ah yess, a quick check of the
Seven catalog lists 3 different nuts. So I just bet the advice I gave
and the advice others gave may be equally appropriate on different year cars.

Second, I did indeed use a 6 point socket purchased from NAPA especially
for this occasion... I used it in conjunction with a 1/2" drive breaker
bar, no ratchets, no adapters. The socket cambered off the nut with any
degree of force beyond just playing with it. Not surprising, as the nut
is about 1/4" thick or so. Believe me when I tell you I wanted
desparately to justify the expenditure for this socket, which doesn't
seem to fit much else.

The steering column in question is original for this car, which has been
in an front collision. It's not in the best of shape which may contribute
to some of its problems. It was a little late for anti-sieze compound and
I did soak it overnight in WD-40. I have not tried to take the nut loose
from the column currently in the car since I had such problems with the
old one, and knew I could adjust from the U joint.

And last, impact wrenches are great things. Next time I have access to
an air compressor in my apartment parking lot, I'll let you know <grin>.
