Here`s a mystery no one can solve to date:
The facts :
1. In l993 I burned a valve returning from a two thousand mile trip (the
Skyline
soiree of New England MGT Register). I limped home the last 100 miles in my
l954
TF.
2. We removed the head and decided to redo the head with bronze guides and
stellite valves. we didn`t change the seats except for the burned one.
3. After the head was done the car would suddenly loose power like two
cylinders
quitting when cruising in 4th on an interstate over 3700 rpms after taking a
gentile and I mean gentile hill.
4. The engine will recover if I push in the clutch and let the rpms drop to
idle
for a second or two.
5. It doesn`t happen on every hill, never in any other gear. The car turns 5500
rpm in any other gear under any kind of load without problem.
6. I have replaced the fuel pump twice on a theory of gas starvation. I have
cleaned all filters including the screen at the tank. I have had the carbs.
redone.
7. I replaced the coils points and plugs, changed the timing(I like to set it
slightly advanced)
8. My mechanic is a close friend who works solely on MGs and he assures me the
guides have plenty of clearance. Besides I have driven the car 2500 miles since
the head was done and the problem still occurs.
I just live with it and I can recover when it occurs in seconds, but it is
annoying. Anybody have ideas or theories? (of course the problem never occurs
when my friend drives the car so he has to rely on my description which is poor)
