If I hold my
thumb over the input, the pump slows, but does not stop
completely. I want to ensure this thing is adjusted before
I crawl under the car to reinstall it. Got any advice for
ensuring it is setup correctly (besides the obvious in the
manual)??

This is an indication that you have a small leak somewhere. The SU pump
is designed such that back pressure on the diaphram causes the pump
points to remain open thus shut off. When the pressure leaks down, the
points close and pumping action returns. Some amount of continuous
action is normal - 1 click every 15 second or so. Much more than this
is an indication of leakage.
Make sure that the disc valves are seating properly. These can get scuffe=
d
or even dented over 30 - 40 years. They should be flat and smooth. The=20
corresponding seat in the pump should also be free from nicks. You should=
also make sure that the inlet, outlet, and filter plugs are seating prope=
rly.
It could be that the fiber washers under each of these is shot, or that t=
he=20
threads are leaking somewhat. I find that a small touch of plumbers goo
around the threads keeps the threads from leaking air.
If it still clicks continuously after it is on the car. then the problem =
may
be in the fuel line or unions. These can often leak a bit of air and caus=
e the
pump to never shut off.
Also, are you sure you tensioned the diaphram properly (per the shop
manual) ? The diaphram needs to be tensioned before completely tightening=
the body screws. If this is not done, the diaphram won't be stretched to =
its
limit and make the pump a bit "vague" in its pumping action.
Good luck and let me know if I may help further. I rebuild pumps on the=20
side as part of the hobby, so I've seen most evey problem. There's not
an SU yet that has defeated me. But I have sure given up on more than
my share of "buzz box" replacements.
