Sounds like it is running rich, especially at idle- yes, this is a problem.
THe extra raw petrol is going to the cat and getting burned there. You could
burn out your cat in short time.
Don't just wank around on it- just do a complete tuneup- Valve lash, plugs,
*timing*, etc- at least clean and inspect the carb, and consider a rebuild if
any problems are found. Make sure the choke isn't stuck whiile you're in
there.
