I've got a lower-rear-end-ratio kit in my workshop but have not
installed it because I still don't have the patience for that kind of
fiddling. Sound familiar?

============
The really interesting thing is that I have been told (by someone who makes
a living at converting TD rear ends(and other stuff)), that the thickness of
the pinion washer that one winds up with after all the fiddling seldom
varies by more than .001". And that is well within spec. Having heard this,
I immediately asked him whether he would sell me a washed that had been
pre-ground to the correct (nominal) thickness. In a moment of weakness
(visions of avoiding the "fiddlies") I agreed to a price of $40 for this
silly washer.
If anyone is interested, I would be happy to publish the thickness of this
magic part.
