Checking Trans Oil Level

I hope this isn't a REALLY dumb question but............

After all the discussion here regarding tranny oil etc. I thought I should 
check the oil level in the transmission for my 79 MGB.  I've had the car for 
a month and all seems fine.

After I removed the rubber cap and felt around I couldn't find the dipstick. 
I checked my Moss catalog and I can see a dipstick should be there, but I 
sure can't find it.
The previous owner isn't available to ask.
