Well quoting from an article by Andres Ditlev Clausager (an
Archivist for Heritage Trust) which was originaly published in MG
Enthusiast and reprinted in Lindsay Porters book. It list Black as a
colour for every year, with the following note.
"You will notice that I have listed Black throughout the production run,
and I believe it was used in all years, but it was not always being a
standard colour, being at times available to special order only."
(From my understanding special orders were not that uncommon)
also
"North American export models from the period 1977-80 had different trim
and trim colours. The paint colour range was the same as for home market
cars, except that black was not always available"
Note the US LE model was finish in Black, there were apx 6700 of these
cars so they are not that rare.
Another Point is that some cars were shipped unassembled or partially
assembled (I know that the Australian MGBs where done this way for a
number of years). These cars were finished in local paint colours so
who knows what colours where available.
One final note. If you like black, paint it black! These cars are meant
to be enjoyed, Originality is great but not if it gets in the way of
enjoyment, and any changes are tastefully done.
