Chip,
I thought that "Skinner's" Union really came from the fact that
they were in the business of taking "special" care of furry animals
and so the old carburetters had indeed some felt (or animal equivalent)
built in.
I'd be glad to hear a better explanation and correct me if I'm wrong.
