>I just got a 52 TD. What is the best way to install seat belts in it?
I don't have belts in my TD, but have been thinking about it.
As I recall, those that have them have placed the anchors in either the
vertical panel behind the rear seats - in which case there is not much
securing them - or at the side of the plywood floor directly above the frame
rail. The latter location would seem to offer better protection from pulling
out, but you're still faced with the problem that the inside anchor points
have nowhere to go but into sheet metal (prop tunnel) or plywood (floor).
Neither of these options seem very good. Under pressure, the weakest anchor
point will give way first, so no matter how strong the outer anchor point
is, the inner anchor point determines overall strength.
I guess that's why I've never been keen on installing them. I'd sooner be
thrown from the car and take my chances than be strapped in and almost
certainly have the belts fail.
Maybe, if Bob Fuller picks this up, he might be able to answer what some of
the diehards do - especially those engaged in racing their T-types.
