| OK, can I try a second time?
The symptoms you describe sound like fuel delivery problems.  If it 
wasn't a clogged fuel filter, my next guess would be that the vent hole 
in the gas cap was clogged, so that the fuel pump was pulling against a 
vacuum in the tank.
Of course, that presumes something fairly unlikely, that something on a 
british car can hold a vacuum, when most parts cannot even hold oil.
