Allen,
I'm just about to install a head to which that has been done. I guess we're
in this together if you do it. My '74 head and the rings went bad for the
winter and A. B. sold me a '68 with a small chip on the edge of the #1
chamber, so I had t have it milled down to what I expect will give me about
9.5:1. Only two of the guides needed replacing and I'm putting in one new
valve, but only to keep them all the same type because I'm that kind of guy.
I also had it ported and radiussed, and the split point softened. I'm
actually considering doing a little of a Bugatti grind on it just to make
sure the sufaces mate, (I don't want to do this twice. It's my daily.) but I
could be talked out of it with a cold beer.
What I'd like to know is; once I get the old head off again, how do I
determine the ACTUAL ratio and capacity? And more importantly, but less
immediate; why does it run so well with a cracked head and bad rings? It has
STILL not failed to start and runs fine and I'm starting to feel like I'm
living on borrowed time.
