Okay, so I'm joining the legions of those with some sort of electrical
problem with the fuel gauge/sending unit circuit. I changed the sending
unit last night and it hasn't improved my problem: the gauge is having
seizures on an almost minute by minute basis. I put in a new sending unit
so, apart from the possibility of a poor ground at the tank, I'm operating
on the assumption that the sending unit is good and the gauge is bad. I
want to check the voltage at the gauge. Hence: rediculously stupid electics
question: I assume that what the sending unit really is is a variable
resistor (Yes/no?). Hence, what the gas gauge really is is an ampmeter
(yes/no?). Can I just hook up my trusty radio shack amp/volt meter to the
lines and make sure that the signal is a steady one (i.e. that the needle's
dance is not due to wildly fluctuating signals from the sending unit)? What
do I read? Amps? What scale? Comments? Diplomas?
I suppose it is time to either (1) ignore the whole thing and fill up every
200 miles or (2) get the gauge fixed.
