The boundary layer effect will choke down the effective area of the
pipe. Just because the cross-sectional area of a 1 x 3.7" rectangle is
more-or-less the same as a 2.25" pipe, doesn't mean they'll flow the
same. Consider what happens to the areas if you assume that the outer
1/8" along the walls doesn't contribute to the flow. That figure is just
an example - I don't know what the boundary layer thickness is for
exhaust flow.
