While not at all a fuel expert, let me expand a bit on the Williams
statement.

With today's modern fuel injection/engine management systems, it is possible
to run a grade of fuel lower than the manufacturer's recommendations. Engine
management systems detect "ping" long before you will by ear and timing is
adjusted by the computer to protect the engine from damage.

This does not mean you are not hurting the engine, just that one of the
causes of damage has been controlled. Long term results of running the wrong
grade of fuel COULD BE carbon build up, shorter plug life, sludge in the
oil, damage from internal excess heat.

The "fact" reported by the VW dealer is simplistic at best, ignorant and
damaging in my opinion. No car manufacturer is going to recommend a higher
grade of fuel than the engine requires, telling the prospective buyer of
higher operating costs, unless it is necessary to long engine life and the
expected performance. For a dealer to do so, perhaps in an attempt to sell a
car, is at least negligent, and probably false advertising at a minimum.

In Roger William's book he says that using a low grade gasoline
(petrol) in an engine with high compression will result in extra heat
with lesser power. I was told that as long as the engine does not
'ping' then the fuel is fine - a 'fact' pointed out to me by my VW
dealer. Is there a fuel expert out there that can give a brief
confirmation or condemnation?
