Well, a little more research has yeilded the following:
D&D does make a plate to adapt late model GM, Buick, Pontiac 
auto-trannys to the Rover block, so assuming the slush-box fits into the 
tunnel with no more than a little banging, the GM trannies are now 
available to me.
Second, Ford makes two trannies that may serve my purpose:  The AOD 
(automatic, w/Overdrive) (the OD ratio is about 0.67 to 1) and the 
AOD-E, which is an electronic-shift version which is apparently more 
robust than the older AOD.  Both of these bolt right onto the back of 
the Ford 289/302/351 so no adapter-plate is required.  I just need to 
locate the dimensions.  I believe they are mechanicaly related to the 
C4, and they get the O/D by locking (or is it unlocking???) up one of 
the planetary gears.
I'm still gonna put a t-5 in the roadster, but that's not the car in 
which I plan on getting stuck in DC rush-hour traffic.  I'll save that 
for a GT donor car (Don't forget me, Dave) with AC.  As it is, my left 
thigh is about twice the size of the right one.
