Surely the engine should spin noticeably faster with plugs out to plugs in?
I changed my plugs yesterday and spun the engine on the starter with them
all out to see what the tach registered. To my surprise it registered
nothing at all - thought it was going fast enough to do so. I was a bit
short of time or I would have put the digital multimeter on and measured
with that, plugs in and out. Have you tried that? 4-cylinder compression
pressures are measured at 275 rpm, according to that manual, equivalent
figures are not given in my V8 manual.
