I'm not sure that will give you what you want. The full voltage (-0.7 V from
it) will still be at the terminals if you put the diode behing the dash. I
think you would have to put the diode on what ever you plug into the dash.

Sometime to be sure they will have a diode across the input to the device so
that if it is plugged or connected wrong it will blow the fuse.
