Hi Stu,
A heat shield might help a bit to separate the pipe's heat from
floorboards. To make it work best, the shield must be spaced out from
both pipe and boards so that it reflects the heat from the pipe and that
the heat absorbed by the shield can be vented by passing air. Seems to
me that you could make some spacers of approx 3/8 inch that would do.
Heat shields of this sort are not unknown--you will see them on
catalysts of cars, and almost everyone with an Austin-Healey has fitted
some sort of shield to the firewall and forward part of floors.
