Hope someone on the list more versed on the TD charging system can help
me with this.
I'm working on a friend's TD that I rewired over the winter months that
has a Volvo B18 engine with overdrive transmission.
The Volvo generator is on the opposite side of the engine and has three
wires going to it. The terminals are labeled D-, D+, and DF. The D-
terminal is a screw going into the case and I have figured that it is
the ground (Volvos are negative ground) and ran a black ground wire to
the steering rack bolt on that side. I do have good continuity to
ground. The D+ terminal, I believe to be the armature lead. On the
Volvo wiring diagram, it has a heavy wire attached to it that goes to
the voltage regulator to a terminal by the same name. I have run a
heavy yellow wire from this terminal to the D terminal on the new stock
repro TD voltage regulator. The DF terminal I believe is the field
terminal and ran the lighter gauge yellow with green wire to the F
terminal on the voltage regulator. The Volvo wiring diagram shows a
light gauge wire connected to this terminal and to the DF terminal on
the voltage regulator.
Previously someone had used a large three terminal voltage regulator
like you'd find on an old Chevy or something. The charging system
worked, but nothing else did. I changed it to a five post repro
regulator so the horn and fuse block would also fit and to give it a bit
of an original look.
Now after hooking the generator up as outlined above, the charging light
is on all the time and the ammeter shows no charging going on. I did
repolarize the generator. I had checked the generator before installing
it by running a wire from the generator case to the negative terminal of
a battery and ran a wire from the D+ to the plus battery terminal. The
generator turned like a motor, though slowly.
My questions: Does the hook up seem correct? Is there a way to check
the generator in place to make sure it is putting out? Or is the check
that I already did sufficient? Is the voltage regulator bad? Is there
a way to test it? Is the Volvo generator compatible with the TD
regulator? How would I tell? I have a couple of other five post
regulators laying around; how can I test them before putting them in the
car and attaching all of the wires (if the regulator is indeed the problem)?
Any other questions I should be asking or troubleshooting that I can do?
Thanks for your help.
