Likely one of two things:
1) Oil on the clutch.
2) Clutch not aligned with the flywheel (this can happen when the engine
mounts are too low or too thick which causes the drive line clutch,
flywheel, and crankshaft to not all be on a common axis.

hello folks
just bought a great old 52 td that is msotly original..and a little rough
but
has the greatest old character....when i put her in reverse she hops so bad
that despite what i do..up the revs...ease the clutch...etc...i cant get her
moving backwards without shaking jittering to pieces...any thoughts
