Thanks for all the replies to this question. The conclusion that I have is
that Skyhook is still coming up with the occasional gear box but that its slim
picking on the datsun scene as these also fit Sprigets and Morris Minors. The
Hi Gear version of the Ford gearbox requires that the engine on the MG TD/TF
be moved back and the front moved down about 1/4". A new motor mount is
supplied to make this happen and no cross member is required to be cut. This
Hi
Gear unit is also available here in the USA from Pierce Manifolds in Gilroy, CA
(http://www.piercemanifolds.com/), look under British heads.....I've email
them for the price and gear ratios in their unitl
I have a TF correspondant in England who has made an extensive study of the
various gear ratio's available in the Ford unit and it is his contention that
the first gear in the common Hi Gear kit is way too low or too high, I'm not
sure but I have the numbers he sent me. He sez that there is an ideal Ford
unit
but it is hard to find because the racers are using them.
Perhaps, Lawrie could take a look at the numbers and give an opinion. One of
our club members (TF) has installed the Hi Gear unit and loves it. Perhaps
the gear ratio on first isn't that big a deal.....its the upper gears wear you
get the bang for the buck, especially 5th.
I have a datsun on my TA and I love it! Now looking at putting a 5 speed on
the TF and Arnolt.....
