My '49 TC didn't stop all that well either. Then one day, I hit the
pedal and it went to the floor. This was in 1956. The original brake
system had seals in the wheel cylinders that used tiny "daisies" made of
thin sheet-metel to hold the seals against the cylinder walls. These
flexed slightly with pressure and eventually one of the tiny "petals"
would break off and there would be NO brakes at all. I replaced the
entire system with seals from EIS that didn't need the daisies.
It still didn't stop worth a damn.
I sold that car the same year. Now (I think) I have the best of both
worlds: a 1981 Victor. It's an MGB with the big engine and front disc
brakes on a steel frame with a fiberglass TF body. It stops very well.
It goes pretty damned well too. ;)
