Bill,
   You wrote that you loosened the nut on the clamp bolt; that bolt must
be removed completely in order to slip out the distributor.  
    Once the distributor is out, don't turn the engine unless you made
your marks when engine was at TDC and you knew #1 was at ignition
position. The TD's distributor (unlike MGBs) is geared to camshaft, so
turning the engine will make it difficult to find your place at
reinstallation time.  
   That said, most of us have had our distributors installed at an
orientation that allows a drooping tach cable to ground the 12v primary
wire to the distributor.  An article in TSO pointed out this familiar
situation.   It's best to reinstall as pictured in the owners handbook or
workshop manual, though operation of the distributor is unaffected.
