That isn't string, it's resistance wire. The coil of fine wire wrapped
around the switch body acts as a resistor to reduce the voltage to the
dash lamps to 10 V (if I remember correctly). Years ago in my TC I had a
switch with a broken resistance wire. I measured the resistance on a goos
switch, then on the bad one substituted a resistor of the correct value.
That switch is long gone and I don't have a record of what resistor I
used. If you have access to a good switch you can measure the resistance
with an ohm meter.
