John,

There are no "shims" associated with the crown wheel in a TD differential.
just a pair of very substantial iron spacers that may or may not be the same
width. Just don't mix them up!

Take the axle off the car but before you "split" it by removing the bolts
that hold the two halves together, get a friend to help, stand it up
vertically and bounce the hub of the broken end on a block of wood a few
times and see if that will dislodge the broken end. In my experience it
works 50% of the time.

If you're one of the other 50% you'll need to split the axle and poke out
the offending piece. Do not do anything to the pinion or its bearings,
that's where the shims are but there's no need to disturb any of that. Drain
the oil out off the diff' before you remove the axle from the car, and don't
forget to refill it when you're done. Disconnect the brake line where the
hose connects to the pipe and tape each end to avoid losing too much fluid.
You'll need to bleed the brakes when everything is assembled.

Cheers and good luck, "Bob".
