I would agree with everything you said, and add:
1. With the plugs out and before using the starter, turn the engine with the
crank handle to prove that it moves freely.
2. Check the fuel filter in the SU pump. This is accessed by unscrewing the
big hex brass nut on the lowest point of the pump.
3. When you are happy with oil flow, etc and are ready to actually start the
car, drain whatever is in the tank and treat it to a couple of gallons of
fresh fuel. This will greatly facilitate starting. If what you drain out
looks and smells like petrol, you can always use it later.
